Protecting what you have built, without standing still
Capital preservation and portfolio management
Capital preservation is a way of managing a portfolio so that its first job is to protect what has already been built, while still allowing for growth that keeps pace with rising prices. It is for investors, retirees and families in the GCC who could not easily recover from a large loss.
For many clients, the first priority is not to lose what has taken years to build. Capital preservation means understanding the risks in a portfolio and deciding deliberately which ones are worth taking.
We help you build a structure that can withstand difficult periods and stay disciplined when markets are volatile.
Preserving capital is not the same as avoiding risk. Cash loses purchasing power to inflation, and a portfolio that looks diversified can still depend on a single market or currency. We help you see the risks you already hold, decide which are worth keeping and agree in advance how the portfolio will be managed through difficult periods. We explain every recommendation and its risks, and the final decision is always yours.
Discipline matters most when markets are falling. Rebalancing rules agreed in calm conditions make it easier to avoid selling at the wrong moment or chasing recent performance. Where ongoing advice is agreed, we review exposures at set intervals and when markets or your circumstances change significantly.

Challenges we address
- Not knowing how a portfolio would behave in a severe market downturn.
- Hidden concentration across holdings that look different on paper.
- The steady erosion of purchasing power from inflation when capital sits in cash.
- Pressure to react to headlines, or to chase recent performance.
- A portfolio that has drifted far from its intended allocation.
Our approach
- Map your exposures
- We look through individual holdings to the underlying asset classes, sectors, regions and currencies.
- Stress-test the portfolio
- We examine how the portfolio might behave in historical and hypothetical scenarios.
- Diversify deliberately
- We recommend changes that reduce unintended concentration while keeping the portfolio aligned with your goals.
- Set rebalancing rules
- We agree in advance when and how the portfolio is brought back to its target, so decisions are not made in a panic.
- Keep discipline
- Where ongoing advice is agreed, we review regularly and help you hold to the plan.
Who it may suit
- Investors whose main objective is to preserve wealth across generations.
- Clients approaching or in retirement who rely on their portfolio for income.
- Business owners who have just realized significant liquidity.
- Anyone concerned that their current portfolio carries more risk than they intend.

Questions
Does capital preservation mean no risk?
No. Every investment, including cash, carries some risk. Capital preservation means managing risk deliberately and avoiding losses you could not recover from.
How often should a portfolio be rebalanced?
There is no single answer. We agree a rebalancing approach with you, usually based on set intervals, set tolerance ranges, or both.
Is holding cash the safest option?
Not over long periods. Cash protects against market falls but loses purchasing power when prices rise, and that loss compounds over time. We help you decide how much cash you need for liquidity and upcoming commitments, and what role the rest of the portfolio should play.
Can you review a portfolio held at several banks?
Yes. We look through holdings at different institutions to the underlying asset classes, sectors, regions and currencies, because concentration is often hidden when a portfolio is spread across several statements.
What should I prepare before a first conversation?
A rough description of where your investments are held, what they are for and how you would feel about a significant fall in their value is enough to start. Please do not send account statements or identity documents before we have agreed to work together.
This page describes a service in general terms. Whether it is suitable for you depends on your circumstances, and it is offered only in jurisdictions where Aurelius Capital is authorized to provide it. Investments can fall as well as rise in value, and you may get back less than you invest. Nothing on this page is a promise of any financial outcome.
